2024 Solo Competition for Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Guitar & Harp: Details and rules

Competition Rules and Other Information:
1. Competition is open to string players (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Classical Guitar, Harp) who are students of active Fresno ASTA members.
2. Participants’ applications must include their private teacher’s current ASTA membership number to establish eligibility. Be sure to have that number ready when you fill out your form! (If a non-member wishes to enter a student in the competition, that teacher must submit a new membership application to National ASTA prior to the competition. Then the participant can submit the form with the teacher’s membership number, as required.)
3. There are three age* divisions:
Novice, age 12 and under
Junior, age 13-18
Senior, age 19-25
*Age at time of competition (June 1, 2024)
4. Repertoire: For all three divisions two works are required: one piece from the Classical or Baroque period, and another one from a contrasting period. All works must be memorized. Performances may not exceed
Novice division: 10 minutes maximum
Junior division: 15 minutes maximum
Senior division: 15 minutes maximum
Pieces may be pre-cut to fit posted time limits, or the judges may stop a performance once the time limit has been reached.
5. This year’s competition will take place in person in Wahlberg Recital Hall at the California State University, Fresno, Department of Music, 2340 E. Keats Ave. Fresno, CA, 93740, on Saturday, June 1, 2024, between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
6. All solos must be played from memory. Those that require accompaniment must be performed with piano. Each applicant is responsible for providing their own pianist. Competitors should dress in concert attire and should treat the competition like a concert. Please bring with you, to share with judges, two copies of the music you will be playing. Thank you!
7. At the discretion of the judges, prizes may be awarded to one or more winners in each division. The Senior Division First Prize will be $150. The Junior Division First Prize will be $100. The Novice Division First Prize will be $50. Each participant will receive a certificate of participation via email. Judges may declare one or more winners in each division. Winners of the 2023 competition and the 2024 competition are qualified to enter the California State ASTA State Competition when it next occurs (it is usually held in October).
